Wellborn Home Additions & ADU: The Orange County Owner’s Guide
Wellborn home additions and ADU projects in Orange County typically run $45,000 – $130,000 for a full addition, or $90,000 – $220,000 for a detached ADU, depending on square footage, site work, and finish level. We stock and install Wellborn-compatible cabinetry, trim, and paneling as part of larger addition and ADU builds, and we match existing Wellborn lines when you’re extending a kitchen, bath, or built-in into new square footage. Most homeowners call us after noticing cabinet faces that don’t align after a foundation shift, door boxes that bind in a new wall, or drawer slides that wear out from day-one use in a high-traffic ADU kitchen.
What you’re usually dealing with is not the cabinet “failing” on its own. It’s the structure around it, or the installation, or the hardware cycle. In Orange County, with our clay-heavy soil and seasonal movement, addition framing settles at a different rate than the original house. That differential shows up first in the cabinet joints and door reveals. The straight answer is usually this: the Wellborn cabinet boxes are still sound, but they need a competent re-set, new hardware, or both, done by a crew that knows additions, not just cabinets.
Which Wellborn Models This Applies To

Wellborn builds in series: Estate, Premier, Select, and Cabinetworks, plus a line of closet and bath storage that crosses into ADU work. The construction changes by series. Estate boxes are plywood-sided with 5/8-inch dovetail drawers. Premier and Select use a furniture-board and solid-wood blend. When you’re matching an existing Wellborn kitchen in a room addition, we need the series name and the door color code from the sticker on the back of a drawer face or inside the sink base. That sticker tells us the lot number, which matters because Wellborn’s finish batches vary slightly between production runs. If the original cabinets are from before 2016, the finish code system changed, so we match by physical sample, not by number.
On an ADU, the practical decision is usually between ordering Wellborn-compatible OEM cabinet boxes for the whole build, or using Wellborn boxes only where the main house sightlines connect and a documented competitor line where the ADU stands alone. Curtis Lane has walked enough of these to say it flat: don’t mix series inside a single run of wall cabinets. The door profiles won’t match and the reveals will be half an eighth off, which sounds small until you stand in front of it every morning. If you’re extending a run, we match series. If it’s a separate ADU kitchen, we spec the series that fits the budget and keep the door style consistent across the whole room.

Signs Your Wellborn Home Additions & ADU Is Failing
- Cabinet doors drift out of alignment after the first rainy season. This is almost always foundation or framing settlement in the new addition, not a cabinet defect. The fix is re-shimming the boxes and adjusting hinges, after the structure is checked.
- Drawer slides bind or stick in the ADU kitchen within the first year. ADU kitchens see heavy use from the first week. Wellborn’s standard slides work, but on a rental or in-law unit we spec soft-close upgrades because the use cycle is triple a normal kitchen’s.
- Corner base cabinet box twists and the lazy Susan scrapes the frame. Corner cabs take settlement diagonally. If the box was installed on subfloor that wasn’t level, the twist shows within two seasons. Re-leveling the box fixes it.
- Molding separates at the ceiling line in the room addition. Truss uplift, common in Orange County with our summer heat and dry air, lifts the ceiling right off the cabinet crown. It’s a structural expansion issue, not a Wellborn quality failure.
- Water staining under the sink base or behind the dishwasher panel. This is plumbing, not cabinet, but it destroys the box if left. We cut out and replace the affected panel and the cabinet bottom, and re-set the plumbing before reinstalling.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For a Wellborn kitchen in a new addition or ADU, the cabinet package itself runs roughly $8,000 – $25,000 depending on series, count of boxes, and the door upgrade. If the job is re-setting and aligning existing Wellborn cabinets in a settled addition, that’s usually a $1,500 – $4,000 scope. If you’re extending a run into new square footage, figure $400 – $1,100 per linear foot of matched cabinet, installed, with hardware.
Every price we give is a written price before work starts. No numbers that move at the door. The written quote includes demo of any failed boxes, leveling, re-installation, hardware adjustment or replacement, and full cleanup. The work is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise, in writing: if the installation fails within the guarantee period, Bradford returns and corrects it at no charge. Straight number, clear scope, no surprises at final invoice.
For a full room addition where the Wellborn cabinetry is part of the interior finish, the cabinet scope sits inside the $45,000 – $130,000 addition number. For an ADU, the Wellborn kitchen and bath cabinets are inside the $90,000 – $220,000 total. We give you the cabinet line item so you see exactly where the money goes.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check the sticker on the back of a drawer face to confirm your Wellborn series. You can inspect the hinges for looseness and watch whether the doors are drifting at the top seam, which tells us settlement is in play. What you should not do is pull cabinet boxes off a wall that was built on an addition foundation you’re not certain has finished moving. A wall cabinet coming loose is a few hundred pounds of box and contents, and when it lets go it doesn’t warn you. Attaching a cabinet to new framing also means hitting studs, boxing around plumbing, and shimming to true level, which takes a man with a 4-foot level and the patience to use it.
If the boxes are sound and you’re just looking at worn soft-close hinges, that’s a simple swap. If the reveals are opening up, the drawers are binding, or you’re seeing drywall cracks near the cabinet line in a room addition, call us at (562) 262-2907 and we’ll tell you what’s structural and what’s cabinet, and give you a written number for the fix.
FAQs

Wellborn cabinet boxes hold up 20 – 30 years when installed level and dry, and that’s about what we see in the field across Orange County. The hardware, especially hinges and slides on high-use bases, wears out in 5 – 10 years and gets replaced long before the boxes fail. The California climate is kind to wood cabinets as long as the kitchen has ventilation and the boxes stay out of direct west-facing sun.
Usually yes. If the box is square and dry, we re-level it, replace the hardware, and adjust the doors. We only replace boxes when there’s water damage, a twisted box from long-term settlement, or when the homeowner wants a different Wellborn series in the new space. Call (562) 262-2907 and we’ll tell you which side of that line you’re on, with a written price.
A full ADU kitchen cabinet package, from measure to installed, typically runs 3 – 5 weeks including order lead time from Wellborn. A repair call or re-alignment on existing cabinets is usually a one-day job. Matching finish from an older Wellborn lot adds a week if we’re ordering a sample for approval.
We keep Wellborn hinges, drawer slides, touch-up kits, and a selection of door bumpers on the trucks. Cabinet boxes are ordered per project from Wellborn’s documented line, along with the series-matched components. We also install and document KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone products alongside Wellborn when the scope calls for it.
