Tamko Driveway & Pavers: The Orange County Owner’s Guide
Tamko driveway and paver replacement in Orange County runs $5,000 to $14,000 installed for a full tear-out and repave, and we keep the common failure points on the truck so most repairs happen same day. The typical discovery is visual: a cracked paver shows up after a rain, a section of the driveway settles and holds water, or the color fades unevenly across the surface. What most people don’t realize is the part that failed is rarely the paver itself. It’s usually what’s underneath it. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Tamko, but we work with their product line daily and we’ll tell you straight what’s worth saving and what needs to go.
Which Tamko Models This Applies To
Tamko’s hardscape line splits into two families that matter for Orange County: their concrete pavers and their clay brick pavers, each with different tolerances and different failure patterns. The concrete pavers run 60mm to 80mm thick and are the ones we most often see in driveways across Anaheim, Irvine, and Mission Viejo. The clay brick line is thinner, usually 50mm to 60mm, and tends to show up on patios and walkways more than vehicle surfaces. If you’re trying to identify what you have without a receipt, flip a partial paver over: Tamko stamps a lot number and series code on the underside of most production runs from the last decade. The letters and numbers before the dash tell you the series; the digits after tell you the batch. Write that down before you call anyone. The single biggest compatibility gotcha is thickness mismatch. A 60mm paver from one Tamko series will not sit flush against an 80mm paver from another series, and if someone patches your driveway with whatever was cheapest that week, you’ll feel the difference every time you pull in. For OEM versus aftermarket, Tamko pavers are made to a specific mix design and color blend. Quality aftermarket pavers exist, but matching color after three years of Orange County sun is the hard part. Faded OEM pavers and fresh aftermarket pavers never look the same, even from the same color family. We spec OEM when the driveway is less than five years old and the color is still holding.

Signs Your Tamko Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Rutting or tire-path depressions. The pavers aren’t failing. The base underneath them has shifted. In Orange County, this usually means decomposed granite or sand base that was never properly compacted or has washed out over years of drainage. The pavers just follow the base down.
- Edge pavers pulling away from the border. When the edge restraint fails, the whole field starts walking. You’ll see a gap open between the border and the field pavers first, then a wave pattern develops. This is what happens when someone skips the concrete edge restraint and uses plastic edging on a driveway that takes daily vehicle loading.
- Standing water that wasn’t there before. Driveways in Orange County are built on a slope for a reason. When water pools, the base is compacting unevenly or the sand joint material has washed out and let pavers tilt. Left alone, freeze-thaw isn’t the concern here. It’s erosion and the slow sink of a low spot getting lower.
- Sand between joints disappearing after every rain. Joint sand is the glue that locks pavers together. When it washes out repeatedly, water is running through the system with more force than it should. That points to a drainage problem either under the driveway or at the edges. Re-sanding without fixing the drainage means re-sanding again in a year.
- Individual paver cracking, especially near the center of the driveway. A cracked paver under load usually means a void underneath it. The paver flexes, hairline cracks form, and it breaks. One cracked paver is a replace job. Seven in a row is a base failure and a partial or full repave.
None of these are cosmetic. Each one tells us something about what’s happening under the surface, and the fix is different. That’s why the first thing we do on a Tamko driveway evaluation is look at the pattern of the damage, not just the damaged paver.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For Orange County, paver driveway installation runs $7,000 to $18,000 when we’re building from scratch, and that range holds for most Tamko projects. A full driveway replacement lands between $5,000 and $14,000 depending on what’s salvageable and what has to come out. The range is driven by three things: square footage, access (a Long Beach side yard with a tight gate costs different than an open front driveway in Yorba Linda), and what the base inspection shows once we lift the first section. You’ll get a written line-item price before any work starts, not a handshake number. That written quote includes demolition, base prep, paver material, sand, edge restraint, compacting, and cleanup. If the base is beyond saving, that’s in the quote too, not a surprise add-on at the end. Every completed job carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: a full-year written guarantee. If any part of the installation fails inside that window, we return and correct it at no charge. That’s not a verbal promise. It’s on the paperwork you get at job close.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s no high-tension danger here like a garage door spring, but there is a weight and tolerance discipline issue that catches most DIY attempts. Paving looks straightforward: dig, base, sand, paver, sand, done. The dig depth has to account for soil conditions you can’t see from the surface, the base has to be compacted in lifts, and the edge restraint is what keeps a new driveway looking new for more than two seasons. You can safely check a few things yourself before calling anyone. Look at the edges first. Look for standing water. Walk the surface barefoot and feel for movement. If pavers rock under your feet, that’s a base call. If you’re replacing a single cracked paver and you’re confident in the cause, that’s a reasonable weekend project. If the problem is a visible wave, a low spot, or edge separation, you’re past the DIY line. Call us at (562) 262-2907 and we’ll tell you if it’s worth a service visit before we schedule anything.
FAQs

A properly installed Tamko paver driveway in this climate lasts 25 to 40 years, with color fading as the first visible sign of wear usually around year 10 to 15 depending on sun exposure. What shortens that lifespan in Orange County is nearly always the base underneath, not the paver surface. Poor drainage and un-compacted base material take down more local paver driveways than wear ever does. Call (562) 262-2907 for an evaluation of what you have and what it needs.
Yes, a small number of cracked or chipped pavers can be pulled out and replaced individually, and edge restraint failures are repairable if caught early. The repair-versus-replace line is drawn where the base failure pattern appears. Cracks in a row, tire ruts, or a wave pattern across the field means the structural base has failed, and at that point patching is throwing money at a symptom. We’ll pull a section on-site and show you what we’re looking at before you commit to any number.
A standard two-car driveway replacement in Orange County runs three to five working days from tear-out to compaction and final sand, weather permitting. A full new installation with base prep from bare soil adds one to two days. You’ll get the schedule in writing with your quote. Call (562) 262-2907 and we’ll walk you through the timeline specific to your property.
We keep the common Tamko series pavers and edge restraints on our trucks for service calls, and anything we don’t have in stock we source directly from the distributor with the lot code you pull off the underside of an existing paver. That lot code matters for color match, so don’t skip it. We also work daily with other brands including KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone for the interior side of projects where the driveway connects to a kitchen or laundry project.
