Quikrete Fence Installation: The Orange County Owner’s Guide

Quikrete fence installation in Orange County typically runs $3,500 to $9,000 for a complete post-and-panel perimeter fence, with most standard backyard jobs landing between $4,500 and $6,500. We stock Quikrete Fast-Setting Concrete Mix and Quikrete 5000 on our trucks, and we can usually start within a week of your estimate. Most Orange County homeowners call us after a winter storm or a hard Santa Ana wind season exposes posts that were set too shallow or backfilled with soil instead of concrete. The telltale sign is almost always the same: a gate post that’s started leaning, or a fence line that’s developed a visible wave along the top rail.

Key takeaways:

  • Installed cost in Orange County runs $3,500 to $9,000 depending on linear footage, soil conditions, and gate count.
  • The concrete mix matters: Quikrete Fast-Setting is the minimum standard for fence posts; Quikrete 5000 is what we spec for gate posts and retaining-wall-adjacent lines.
  • Post depth and proper curing are the two things that separate a fence that lasts 10 years from one that’s leaning in 3.
  • Every job gets a written price before work starts, and the full installation is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise.

Which Quikrete Models This Applies To

Quikrete makes a few different concrete products that apply to fence installation, and the right one depends on what you’re setting. Quikrete Fast-Setting Concrete Mix is the standard for most fence posts: it sets in 20 to 40 minutes and doesn’t require premixing, which makes it the go-to for line posts on flat ground. Quikrete 5000 is a high-early-strength mix that reaches 5,000 PSI; we use it for gate posts and any post carrying hinge weight, because that’s where ordinary mixes fail first in Orange County’s adobe and sandy-loam soils. There’s also Quikrete All-Purpose Gravel, which belongs at the bottom of every post hole for drainage. If your fence was built without it, water sits at the base of the post and rots it from below, especially in coastal spots like Costa Mesa and Huntington Beach where the marine layer keeps things damp.

Compatibility gotcha: Quikrete Fast-Setting is not the right product for posts set in ground that holds water. In areas of Orange County with heavy clay, like parts of Irvine and Tustin, we’ve pulled 4-year-old posts that were set in Fast-Setting and found the concrete had never fully cured because the hole retained standing water. Those posts need Quikrete 5000, which is formulated to cure in wet conditions. If you’re not sure which mix was used on your existing fence, look at the concrete collar around the post: Fast-Setting has a chalky, grayer finish; 5000 cures to a denser, darker gray with a tighter surface.

Brand note: Bradford Remodeling Co Orange County is an independent contractor and not affiliated with Quikrete. We buy Quikrete product off the shelf at local building supply yards the same as any homeowner would, and we’re familiar with its spec sheets because we use it every week. We also stock name-brand materials across our other project lines, including KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone, when a fence job turns into a larger backyard scope.

Signs Your Quikrete Fence Installation Is Failing

  • Leaning posts at the gate. This is the number one failure we see in Orange County. Gate posts take cyclic load every time the gate swings, and if they were set in Fast-Setting without gravel drainage underneath, the concrete collar eventually cracks and the post works loose. The fix is pulling the post, drilling a deeper hole, and resetting in Quikrete 5000 with gravel at the base.
  • A visible wave along the top of the fence line. When individual posts are set at slightly different depths, or when some posts were set in dirt while others got concrete, the stringers sit uneven and the whole line develops a roller-coaster profile. This is a workmanship issue, not a material issue, and it’s one of the most common callouts we get after a homeowner tries a handyman install to save money.
  • Posts that feel solid at the top but move at ground level. That’s a post that’s rotted below grade. In Orange County’s heavier soil, water collects at the concrete-to-wood junction and stays there. Rot sets in at the shallowest point of the post, and by the time you feel the movement, there’s typically 3 to 5 inches of punky wood hidden below the surface.
  • Cracked concrete collars around the base of posts. Concrete cracks when the post moves sideways under wind load. A radial crack around the collar means the post has been flexing, and a fence in that condition won’t survive another Santa Ana season without starting to cant.
  • Gates that drag or won’t latch. The gate itself isn’t usually the culprit. The hinge post has drifted out of plumb, which shifts the geometry of the entire gate assembly. Adjusting hinges buys you a few weeks; resetting the post fixes it for good.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a full Quikrete fence installation in Orange County, budget $3,500 to $9,000. A standard 50-to-70-foot backyard fence with two gates and typical soil conditions lands around $4,500 to $6,500. Here’s how that breaks down:

  • Post setting (materials and labor): $30 to $55 per post, depending on depth and whether we’re using Fast-Setting or 5000.
  • Fence panels or board-and-stringer assembly: $18 to $35 per linear foot, material dependent.
  • Gate fabrication and hardware: $200 to $600 per gate, depending on width and whether it’s a single or double swing.
  • Demolition and haul-off of the old fence: $400 to $900 for a typical backyard line.
  • Permit coordination: Orange County requires a fence permit when the height exceeds 6 feet or when the fence is in a front-yard setback. We pull the permits and close them out; the fee is passed through at cost.

What drives the range: linear footage is the obvious one, but soil conditions matter more than most homeowners expect. Rocky or hard-packed ground in the foothill cities like Yorba Linda and Anaheim Hills adds drilling time. Sloped lots add step-down post work. And if your existing posts were set without drainage gravel, every one of them has to be re-dug and re-set, which adds labor. You get a written line-item price before we start, and that price doesn’t move unless you change the scope. That’s The Garrison Standard, and it’s non-negotiable.

DIY or Call Us?

Setting a fence post in Quikrete is one of the few projects around the house that looks straightforward and goes wrong in ways that aren’t obvious until a year later. If you want to test a post yourself, here’s what you can safely check: grab the post at chest height and push. Movement at the top means the post is no longer bonded to the concrete. Look at the collar for cracks. Look for soil that’s pulled away from the base of the post, which tells you water has been pooling there.

What you shouldn’t do is try to pull and reset a gate post by yourself. A gate post in concrete can weigh 150 pounds coming out of the ground, and if it breaks while you’re leveraging it, it goes sideways hard. Beyond that, the detail work that separates a permanent fix from a repeat failure, specifically the drainage gravel, the post depth below the frost line, and the cure time before the gate goes back on, is where DIY installs in Orange County routinely fall apart. We’ve re-done plenty of them. Straight number, clear scope, no surprises at final invoice. If you want the post done right the first time, call (562) 262-2907.
