Techo-Bloc Driveway & Pavers: The Orange County Owner’s Guide

Techo-Bloc driveway pavers installed in Orange County typically run $7,000 – $18,000 for a full driveway, while spot repairs for failed pavers or a failing base run $500 – $2,500 depending on square footage and what’s underneath. We stock common Techo-Bloc series on the truck and can match most patterns same-week. The usual discovery is a paver that’s sunk half an inch at the joint, a corner spalling off, or a low spot collecting water after a hard rain.

What most Orange County homeowners find is that the pavers themselves are rarely the problem. Techo-Bloc units are dense, color-stable, and built to handle traffic. What fails first is almost always what’s under them: the base, the bedding course, or the edging that holds the field together. Once that goes, the pavers shift, crack at the edges, or sink. Fixing the part means fixing what supports it. Otherwise you’ll be back out there in two years looking at the same low spot.

We’re an independent Orange County contractor. We install and repair Techo-Bloc product, but we’re not a Techo-Bloc affiliate or factory outlet. That matters because our recommendation is based on what holds up in your driveway, not on a brand rep’s spec sheet.

Which Techo-Bloc Models This Applies To

A home office with a built-in desk and shelves

Techo-Bloc manufactures its pavers in series lines, and the series determines dimensions, joint width, and how the field interlocks. The most common ones we see in Orange County driveways are the Blu 60 mm (a modular 60mm paver with tight joints), Blu 80 mm (heavier duty for vehicular traffic), Industria (a linear plank look, 60mm and 80mm), Mista (random-format stone texture), and Semma (a clean, square-edge 60mm paver). If your driveway predates about 2015, you may be working with an older lot from the Victorien or Tradition lines, and those are no longer always in local circulation.

The compatibility gotcha most people hit: dimensions aren’t interchangeable across series. A Blu 60mm paver is not the same size as an Industria 60mm paver, even though both are called “60mm.” That 60mm refers to thickness. Length and width vary by series. When you’re replacing a broken paver, you need the series name, the color or blend name (Techo-Bloc colors include Champlain Grey, Shale Grey, Sandalwood, Chestnut Brown, and others), and the actual measured length and width of an undamaged paver pulled from the field. Color lots also shift slightly year to year, so an exact color match to a 2018 driveway may require a blended replacement or accepting a subtle variation that weathers in over a season.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for Techo-Bloc specifically, there’s no meaningful “aftermarket” paver in the traditional parts sense. A pavers is a structural unit, not a component. You’re either using a genuine Techo-Bloc unit matched to the series, or you’re using a look-alike that will be visibly different at the joint. We stock genuine Techo-Bloc in the common Orange County lines and order direct for unusual colors. For the non-visible parts that matter, the base material and the bedding sand, there’s no brand loyalty. We specify material that drains and compacts correctly for Southern California’s clay-heavy soil, and that’s a quality decision, not a brand decision.

Signs Your Techo-Bloc Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • Paver has sunk below the surrounding field. This means the base under that section has washed out or wasn’t compacted to spec. In Orange County, heavy winter rain on clay soil is the usual trigger. The water finds a void, the base settles, the paver drops.
  • Edge pavers are shifting outward at the driveway border. The edge restraint has failed. If the plastic or concrete edging isn’t spiked correctly or has snapped, the entire field slowly walks outward under vehicle load. You’ll see a widening gap between the driveway and the lawn or planter.
  • Corners chipping or spalling off individual pavers. This usually shows up when pavers are installed too tight with no room to move, or when a vehicle consistently turns on the same paver with a loaded tire. Once the corner goes, the damage accelerates because the compromised edge now takes the point load.
  • Standing water or a visible depression after rain. Any low spot that holds water for hours after the rain stops is a base failure in progress. Water sitting on the surface seeps into the joints, erodes the bedding sand, and makes the depression worse every season.
  • Weeds growing through joints in one concentrated area. A few weeds between joints is normal maintenance. A dense patch in one spot means sand has washed out and organic material is accumulating in that void. The pavers aren’t locked together there anymore, and the problem will spread.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

An open living space after a whole-home remodel

In Orange County, a full Techo-Bloc driveway replacement runs $7,000 – $18,000 installed, with most two-car driveways landing in the $10,000 – $14,000 range. Spot repair, where we pull up a failed section, rebuild the base, and reset the pavers, typically runs $500 – $2,500 depending on square footage and what the excavation reveals. Those are written prices, given before we start, and they don’t change at the door.

What drives the range: total square footage, current base condition (if it was originally installed over sand without proper compaction, we’re rebuilding more than we’re replacing), paver series and color availability, and whether the driveway has curves, borders, or inlays that require cuts. The cost includes tearing out the failed section or the full field, hauling off debris, rebuilding the base in lifts with compaction between each lift, re-setting pavers with fresh bedding sand, new edge restraint, and joint sand worked into the joints. Our workmanship on the repair or replacement is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it fails inside that year, we come back and correct it at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

What a homeowner can safely do: identify the series name and color by pulling one paver and checking the underside or the original order paperwork, document where the failure is, and keep traffic off a visibly sunken area to prevent the damage from spreading. That’s useful information to have before you call.

Where DIY goes wrong: resetting a paver or two on top of a base that’s already failed. You can lift pavers, add sand, and reset them in an afternoon, and it will look right for six weeks. Then the base settles again and you’re back where you started, minus the weekend. The correct repair means excavating to the bottom of the base, checking the depth against what the soil needs, re-compacting in lifts, and re-bedding the pavers. That requires a plate compactor you don’t own and an understanding of soil behavior that matters more in Orange County clay than most people realize. If the edge restraint is broken, which it usually is by the time pavers shift, the whole perimeter has to be re-done or the field will keep walking.

If you want a straight diagnosis first, call us at (562) 262-2907. We’ll tell you whether it’s a half-day repair or a full rebuild, and the number we give you is the number on the written estimate.
