Barrette Driveway & Pavers: The Orange County Owner’s Guide

Barrette driveway and paver replacement in Orange County typically runs $7,000 to $18,000 installed, depending on square footage, paver style, and what’s underneath the surface. Most Barrette-compatible paver repairs we handle come down to failed edge restraints, shifting base material, or cracked units from vehicle weight. We stock common Barrette paver profiles and matching edge restraint hardware on our trucks, so most single-unit replacements and edge repairs get done in one visit.

How most Orange County homeowners find us: the pavers near the garage apron start sinking, a corner of the driveway drops half an inch, or weeds are pushing up through joints that used to be tight. Sometimes it’s a single cracked paver right where the trash bins roll. Either way, the problem is usually not the paver itself – it’s what’s under it or what’s holding the edge.

Which Barrette Models This Applies To

Barrette manufactures concrete pavers and edging systems sold through big-box retailers, and the compatibility question is the first thing we sort out on a job walk. Most Orange County driveways we see use Barrette’s interlocking concrete paver lines – typically 4×8, 8×8, or 12×12 nominal units that lock via built-in spacer lugs. The gotcha: Barrette pavers from different series lines are not always dimensionally interchangeable. A 4×8 from their Holland line may sit a quarter-inch proud against a 4×8 from a Value-Added line because the lug profiles and chamfer depths differ.

If the paver has no visible stamp, measure it with a tape. A true 4×8 nominal paver measures 3-7/8 inches by 7-7/8 inches. If yours measures a full 4×8 without the 1/8-inch shave, it’s a wet-cast product, not a dry-cast Barrette unit, and we order accordingly. For edge restraint, Barrette’s spike-and-rail edging works with all their dry-cast series. OEM replacement units run $0.80 to $2.50 per paver depending on profile and color. Aftermarket equivalents from Belgard or Unilock are dimensionally close but never a guaranteed color match – we tell Orange County homeowners to expect a visible difference if we mix brands on a visible swath of driveway. On Bradford Remodeling Co Orange County jobs, we match OEM first and only use equivalents when the series is discontinued.

Signs Your Barrette Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • Sunken pavers near the garage or street apron. This means the sub-base has eroded or was never compacted properly. In Orange County, the freeze-thaw cycle is minimal, but heavy rain years – like the 2022-2023 season – loosen sandy subgrades quickly. Water gets under the pavers, the base shifts, and you get a visible dip within a season.
  • Edge pavers spreading outward. The edge restraint has failed. Barrette’s spike-and-rail is steel, and in coastal Orange County salt air, the spikes corrode and lose grip. Without a firm edge, the entire field of pavers walks outward under vehicle load until you see a widening gap at the border.
  • Cracked pavers in the wheel path. A paver that cracks along the wheel line is taking load it was never bedded for. Usually the sand setting layer was too thin – under 1 inch – or the base has a soft pocket. We see this most in older Anaheim Hills and Fullerton driveways where the original base was decomposed granite, not Class II road base.
  • Weeds pushing through joints every few weeks. Polymeric sand has failed. In Orange County’s dry summers, cheap joint sand dries out, cracks, and washes away in the first rain. Once joints open up, weed seeds get in, roots push the pavers apart, and the problem compounds.
  • Wobbling pavers under foot. A paver that rocks means the bedding layer has a void. It might be an ant colony, a rotted tree root, or a low spot from original installation. Left alone, a rocking paver transmits load unevenly to its neighbors, which is how a single loose unit becomes a five-paver repair.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled living room with built-in shelves around the fireplace

A full Barrette paver driveway replacement in Orange County runs $7,000 to $18,000, installed. The spread depends on three things: total square footage, the condition of the existing base, and whether we’re pulling and reusing sand or tearing out to soil and starting fresh. A 400-square-foot driveway with reusable base runs near the low end. A 1,000-square-foot driveway with a failed base, tree root removal, and re-compaction runs toward the top.

Scope Orange County Price Range
Full paver driveway replacement (400-600 sq ft) $7,000 – $11,000
Full paver driveway replacement (600-1,000 sq ft) $11,000 – $18,000
Edge restraint repair (per 50 linear ft) $250 – $600
Single paver replacement (including labor) $40 – $120 per unit
Base repair & paver re-set (per 100 sq ft section) $1,800 – $3,500

Every quote is a written line-item price, given before any work starts. That’s The Garrison Standard at work – no numbers that move at the door. The price includes demolition and haul-off of failed material, base prep, new bedding sand, the pavers themselves, edge restraint, and polymeric joint sand. If your project falls under our general contracting scope, the work carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair doesn’t hold inside a year, we come back and correct it at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things yourself before calling. Walk the driveway and mark every sunken paver with chalk. Note where water pools after rain. Check if edge pavers have pulled away from their border. That information makes the first phone call more productive because we know what to put on the truck.

What we don’t recommend is pulling and re-setting pavers yourself. A dry-cast Barrette paver weighs 18 to 25 pounds. The base, compaction, and joint sand steps are where most DIY repairs fail – a homeowner can re-set a paver perfectly and still have it sink six months later because the base underneath was never addressed. Improperly compacted base is the single most common cause of repeat paver failure we correct in Orange County. If the paver sits in a vehicle path, the repair has to hold under thousands of load cycles. That’s work worth getting done by a crew that will write down the scope and stand behind it. Call (562) 262-2907 for an estimate, and Curtis Lane or one of our field leads will walk the site with you.
